Principal's Welcome

St Vincent’s NS or Coolarne National School as it is known locally, is located to the south east of the parish of Lackagh and Turloughmore. The school was founded by the French Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul in the early part of the twentieth century. It first opened its doors to children on 6th of November 1928. The school was run by the nuns until the first lay Principal was appointed in 1974. Today the school continues to thrive, with the recent addition of a Pre School, Breakfast Club and After school child care service for families attending the school.

Since its foundation, the school has been instrumental in preparing its students for their chosen path in life. Here in the school, we endeavour to give every child the best possible start in life through various initiatives such as Aistear and Early Intervention programmes, alongside a broad exposure to all areas of the curriculum.

We are active participants of the Green Schools Initiative and have been successful in achieving all five green flags. For many years the school has taken part in the annual NUIG Science fair and achieved the Primary School Exhibit Award for 2019.

Every child is given the opportunity to engage with instrumental music and singing, while swimming is a part of the aquatics curriculum offered to all children from Third Class upwards.

The school is also acknowledged as contributing to the wider fabric of society particularly to the GAA, both at club and County level. Many great sportsmen and women began their school life in St Vincent’S NS Coolarne, where their interest in sport was fostered and encouraged. This continues to this day.
